Joyce Brand

Joyce Brand is a writer, editor, film & video editor, and accounting consultant who is dedicated to promoting special jurisdictions for peace, prosperity, and better governance. She is co-author of the book Economics and the Spiritual Life of Free Men, and the intellectual heir of philosophers Spencer Heath and Spencer Heath MacCallum. She lives in the ZEDE Ciudad Morazán in Honduras, a prototype Free City based on the ideas of the two Spencers.

The book she co-authored is Spencer Heath’s, published decades after his death. She came to it through Spencer Heath MacCallum, Heath’s grandson and intellectual executor, and did enough of the work of turning an unfinished manuscript into a readable book to be credited as co-author rather than as editor.

She has since written Pioneering Prosperity: The Morazán Model for Free Cities, an account of the city she lives in and of what happens when Heath’s proposition, that a community can be owned and run by a proprietor who leases rather than taxes, is actually built and then occupied by several thousand people who have never read the theory.

She writes for the Foundation and on its Substack, and her vantage point is rare in this movement for being unsentimental. She lives in the thing rather than visiting it.
