Joyce Brand

Joyce Brand is a governance architect and writer who studies the structural design of voluntary, contractual governance, drawing on forty five years of reading economics and political philosophy, and who is dedicated to promoting special jurisdictions for peace, prosperity, and better governance. She is co-author of the book Economics and the Spiritual Life of Free Men, and the intellectual heir of philosophers Spencer Heath and Spencer Heath MacCallum. She lived for years in the ZEDE Ciudad Morazán in Honduras, a prototype Free City based on the ideas of the two Spencers, and still chronicles it month by month.

The book she co-authored is Spencer Heath’s, published decades after his death. She came to it through Spencer Heath MacCallum, Heath’s grandson and intellectual executor, and did enough of the work of turning an unfinished manuscript into a readable book to be credited as co-author rather than as editor.

She published Pioneering Prosperity: The Morazán Model for Free Cities in 2024, an account of the city she lived in and of what happens when Heath’s proposition, that a community can be owned and run by a proprietor who leases rather than taxes, is actually built and then occupied by several thousand people who have never read the theory.

She has since built the Consent Architecture Framework, a way of reading a jurisdiction’s structure for how it handles consent, how far it is insulated from reversal, and whether it can last, and has applied it to the question of how the Honduran ZEDEs kept operating after the state moved against them. A second book, The Sovereign Network: How Network Autonomy Builds Durable Prosperity, is in preparation. Her vantage point is a rare one in this movement: she lived in the thing for years rather than visiting it.
