Matthias Gertz

Matthias Gertz is a co-founder of the Bürgergenossenschaft Mittelsachsen, a citizens’ cooperative registered in Döbeln that pools local capital to hold and run assets for its members. It is a modest, legal and thoroughly German version of the Free Cities idea: not a new jurisdiction, but ownership of the things a community depends on moved from the municipality to the people who use them.

His day job is the family tax consultancy. Together with his brother Hendrik he runs the firm founded in 1949 in Wilster, a small town near the mouth of the Elbe in Schleswig-Holstein, now in the third generation, and in 2018 he took over the Döbeln office as successor to his father Horst Gertz, after sixteen years working outside the family business.

His extensive experience in the financial industry, including the financial crisis of 2008, its precursors and aftermath, he processed into an overarching advisory approach for medium-sized entrepreneurs, which encompasses the entire assets of the client and integrates financial, legal and tax aspects into a financial architecture that is stable over the generations.

He is a business graduate and passed his tax adviser examination in 1998.
