Plumia

Lauren Razavi is a technologist, political scientist and lifelong global citizen who has lived as a digital nomad since 2013. She is executive director of Plumia, an innovation lab (part of the all-remote company SafetyWing) that aims to build “a country on the internet” for borderless workers.

She is the author of Global Natives, a book on the past, present and future of borderless work, and writes an award-winning newsletter of the same name.

Plumia sits inside SafetyWing, a company selling insurance and benefits to people who work outside any one country’s system, which gives the project something most network-state proposals lack: a business already serving the population it wants to organise.

Her argument is that the digital nomad is a preview rather than a curiosity. Once work is portable, the bundle a state offers, residence, healthcare, pension and taxation, comes apart, and somebody has to reassemble the parts for people whose lives no longer fit inside one border.
