Jeremy Kauffman sat on the board of the Free State Project, the New Hampshire-based libertarian migration initiative, from 2018 until 2023. He founded the blockchain file-sharing project LBRY and co-founded the video platform Odysee.
An American entrepreneur and activist, he is based in New Hampshire, where LBRY was built, and has become one of the Free State Project’s most visible public figures. LBRY set out to publish and share files over a blockchain rather than through a company’s servers, and Odysee grew out of it as a video platform on the same protocol, both built on the premise that infrastructure nobody controls is harder to censor than infrastructure somebody does. LBRY Inc. wound down in 2023 after a long fight with the Securities and Exchange Commission over whether its token was a security, and Odysee continues under new ownership.
His case for the Free State Project is the movement’s argument in miniature. Concentrating liberty-minded people in one small jurisdiction changes what is politically possible there far faster than persuading an entire country, and New Hampshire is small enough for a few thousand deliberate arrivals to matter.
He stood as the Libertarian candidate in the 2022 United States Senate election in New Hampshire, and in 2026 was elected chair of the state’s Libertarian Party and launched the Free State Party, which despite the name is a private membership network for people who have moved to New Hampshire rather than an electoral party. He writes on technology, censorship and political strategy on his Substack.
