Per Bylund

Per L. Bylund, PhD, is the Johnny D. Pope Chair and an associate professor in the School of Entrepreneurship at Oklahoma State University’s Spears School of Business. He is also a senior fellow at the Mises Institute and an associated researcher at the Ratio Institute in Stockholm, and he held faculty positions at the University of Missouri and at Baylor University before Oklahoma State.

He is the author of several books and has published widely on entrepreneurship, management, economics and the history of economic thought.

His book The Seen, the Unseen, and the Unrealized takes Bastiat’s argument a step further. The cost of a regulation is not only the visible burden and the transaction it prevents, but the businesses that were never started and the industries that never formed, which no impact assessment can measure because they leave no trace.

That question is why his work matters to this movement: a new jurisdiction is the one place where the unrealised can actually be observed, by permitting things that are prohibited elsewhere and seeing what appears. He has also edited A Modern Guide to Austrian Economics and the Research Handbook on Austrian Economics in Management and Entrepreneurship, and writes for a general audience on entrepreneurship as the driving force of an economy rather than as a career choice. His later books include How to Think about the Economy: A Primer and Entrepreneurship and Evolutionary Economics for Cambridge University Press. He is field editor for the Journal of Business Venturing, an associate editor of the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, and sits on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Review, the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and the Journal of Management Studies.
